Les casse-têtes en bois : un jeu intemporel pour tous les âges

Wooden puzzles: a timeless game for all ages

What sets a wooden puzzle apart from a jigsaw, and how to choose the one that will suit.

A puzzle is not a jigsaw

The two are often confused. A jigsaw is rebuilt by following a picture: each piece has one place and one only, and you progress by elimination. A wooden puzzle shows you nothing — you have to work out how the pieces articulate with one another, often in three dimensions, sometimes with a hidden mechanism.

Hence a clear difference in experience: a jigsaw advances steadily, whereas a puzzle resists for a long time and then gives way all at once, the moment you grasp its principle.

The main families

Assemblies: pieces to fit together into a closed shape — a sphere, a ball, an animal. Taking it apart is often easy; putting it back much less so.

Sliding puzzles: every piece stays inside a frame and has to slide around the others to free the right one. The Âne rouge is the best-known example.

Secret boxes and mechanisms: you have to find the opening, with no instructions and without forcing anything.

Disentanglement puzzles: rings, cords and rods to separate — the ones that most give the impression it cannot be done.

Choosing your level

At Orac Games, every puzzle carries a level from 1 to 5 shown on its page. It is the most useful guide when buying a gift:

Level 1, beginner · level 2, easy · level 3, intermediate · level 4, hard · level 5, extreme

For a first gift or for a child, aim for 1 or 2: a puzzle that is too hard gets put down and never comes back out. For someone who has already solved a few, 4 and 5 exist for exactly that.

Frequently asked questions

Is a solution included?

It depends on the model — each product page says so.

Are they played alone or with others?

Most are solved alone, but they travel fast around a table: it is often between several people that the solution finally appears.

And if you can't do it?

That is the point. A puzzle gets put down and picked up again — the solution rarely comes in a single sitting.
